# Text, code and notes

> Paste code and it arrives as code, with the language already set. Notes that may hold a password are covered on screen until you tap them.

Not everything you move between devices is a file. Zas treats text as a first-class item.

## Notes

Type or paste text and send it. It becomes an item with its own countdown, exactly like a file.

Use it for an address you need on your phone, a serial number, a paragraph you are moving between machines.

## Code

Paste code and Zas recognises it.

It arrives as code: monospaced, coloured, with the language already set. The item shows the detected language and lets you change it if the guess was wrong.

Nothing is reformatted and nothing is escaped. What you paste is what the other device gets.

## Covered notes

Some notes appear covered when you open Zas.

That happens because the sending device marked the note as possibly holding a password. **The check runs on the sending device, before encryption.** The mark stays inside the encrypted item, and the server does not store it as a readable field.

Tap the note to reveal it. It covers itself again when you switch channels or come back to the tab.

<Warning>
  A cover only protects against someone reading over your shoulder.

  A note with no mark is shown normally. That does not mean it holds no password.
</Warning>

You can turn covers off in Settings.

## Link previews

Paste a web address and Zas can show a preview of it.

This is the one case where the server sees an address you sent, because something has to fetch the page to build the preview. Zas only does it when you ask for it.

## Titles

You can rename any item, including a note or a snippet. The title travels inside the encrypted item. The server never receives an open filename or title.
