# Pins

> A pin pauses an item's five-day countdown. Release it and the countdown resumes where it stopped. The free plan gives 15 pins, and you can earn 20 more.

A pin is the one way to keep something in Zas. It is deliberately limited.

## What a pin does

Pinning **pauses** the countdown. The ring stops where it is.

Release the pin and the countdown resumes from that exact point. A pin never resets the clock and never adds days.

An item pinned with two days left still has two days left when you release it, whether that is tomorrow or next year.

## How many pins you get

| Plan | Pins |
| - | - |
| Without an account | None |
| Free plan | 15, plus the ones you earn |

## Earning more pins

Each person new to Zas who joins a channel you are in adds **+1 pinned for everyone, permanently. Up to +20.**

Earned pins are permanent. They do not go away if that person later leaves, and you do not lose them.

On the free plan that is a ceiling of 35 pinned items.

## When you run out

Zas will not silently drop something. When you try to pin past your limit, it tells you and gives you three real choices:

* Unpin something you no longer need at hand.
* Let this one leave on its own, like everything else.
* Cancel.

## A pin holds storage

A pinned item keeps its space for as long as it stays pinned. That is the trade.

Fifteen pinned photos on the free plan can fill 100 MB of storage on their own. Unpinning one frees its space as soon as it expires, or immediately if you delete it.

## Pins and direct transfers

You cannot pin a direct transfer. Nothing was stored, so there is nothing to hold.

If you want to keep something, send it as a [stored item](/en/concepts/stored).
