# Share links

> Turn an item into a public link. The key sits after the # in the address, so Zas serves the item without being able to read it.

A share link lets anyone open one item, with no account and no app.

## How to make one

Open an item and choose **Share**. Zas gives you a link and a QR code.

The link looks like this:

```text theme={null}
https://zas.red/s/8f2c41ab9d7e05c3f1a6b2d840e97315#Kx7pQ...
```

Two parts matter:

* Before the `#` is the item ID. The server sees this.
* After the `#` is the key. **Browsers never send that part to a server.**

Zas can serve the item and still not read it. Anyone who has the whole link can open it. That is the design: the link is the key.

<Warning>
  Treat a share link like the file itself. Forwarding the link forwards the contents.
</Warning>

## What the person opening it sees

The item, and a note that says it leaves on its own, like everything in Zas.

Zas does not load analytics on a public link page, and it does not ask them to sign in or install anything.

## Watching a link

The item shows a live count: **views, copies and downloads**.

Zas counts events, not people. It does not identify who opened your link.

## Taking it back

**Stop sharing** kills the link immediately. Someone who opens it afterwards sees "This link no longer exists."

A link also dies when the item behind it expires. You do not have to remember to clean up.

## If part of the link is lost

Some chat apps and email clients cut a web address at the `#`. When that happens the person sees "Part of the link is missing."

Nothing is broken. Send the full link again, or send the QR code, which always carries the whole thing.

## Reporting a link

Every public link page has **Report this link**, with reasons for malware, phishing, harassment, copyright and other.

A report records the reason, the link ID and the account ID. To limit automated reports Zas briefly uses a protected digest of the IP address. An open report is kept until it is reviewed, and a resolved report is deleted after 90 days.

## Organization links

A link created inside an organization is not public. The person opening it must sign in, and must be an active guest, member or administrator of that organization.

The link does not create memberships and does not allow anonymous access.
